In the ninth year of Yonghe, during the beginning of late spring, we gathered at the Lanting Pavilion in Shanyin County of Kuaiji Prefecture for the purification ritual. All the virtuous scholars arrived, young and old alike were present. This place had lofty mountains and steep hills, dense forests and tall bamboo; there were also clear streams rushing swiftly, winding around the surroundings. We used these streams to float cups of wine, sitting by them. Even without the grandeur of music and stringed instruments, drinking wine and composing poetry was enough to express our deep emotions.

On this day, the sky was clear and bright, with gentle breezes blowing. Looking up at the vastness of the universe, and looking down at the abundance of all things, one could freely let their eyes wander and their minds roam, experiencing the ultimate joy of sight and sound. Indeed, it was delightful.
